Substrate producing diffuse brown or mauve colonies when hydrolysed by bacteria in the presence of an iron salt. The colour intensity is similar to that given by the well-established substrate Esculin [ 531-75-9 ]. The picture below shows catechol beta-D-riboside in agar hydrolysed by various pathogenic bacteria.
